Malachi 3 is on every Church’s building campaign short list of texts to be preached. But this text is not about giving to our churches. It is about the effect of corrupt leadership on its people, and it is a call for us to place our hope in God alone rather than in the men who lead us.

The God of the Bible looks endlessly patient. After all, his love for us knows no bounds. His arrival waits upon the last of His Children to turn toward Him. But, in the book of Malachi, we see a people who misunderstood his patience and abused it. God’s response may shock you.

Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated. What if I told you that there was so much more to this claim than we see – this statement is about more than election, it is about God’s holiness and his call to us to put away the things of this world and live in obedience to Him.

The Seven Churches are real historical churches with a real history and real problems. However, John’s words to them offer a timeless truth. This week we looked at the church of Sardis and saw how their misplaced hope led to defeat and embarrassment. However, the promise of Christ is one whose victory is certain and the call to the Christian is to place our hope in Him.
